Music echoed through the halls as students, faculty, and guests gathered to celebrate Juneteenth at Full Sail University. Hosted by the Black Student Union, the event transformed a portion of campus into a space dedicated to culture, community, and reflection.
According to the National Park Service, the word “Juneteenth” is a Black English contraction, or portmanteau, of the month “June” and the date “Nineteenth.” Colorful decorations, informational displays, and local vendors helped create an inviting atmosphere as attendees moved between tables, conversations, and activities throughout the celebration. The event blended education and entertainment, offering visitors an opportunity to learn about the historical significance of Juneteenth while also engaging with the modern culture and traditions that continue to shape the Black community today. With a raffle, a DJ battle, and an open mic for poetry and expression, the event was open to anyone around to join.
Throughout the event, music played a central role. Songs filled the space as attendees socialized, participated in activities, and supported student-led initiatives. The combination of music, food, and conversation created an environment that felt both celebratory and welcoming. Rather than functioning as a formal presentation, the event encouraged participation and interaction, allowing attendees to engage with the celebration at their own pace. When asked, event goers were more than excited to share their thoughts. “It feels like a museum and a concert.” “I’ve never been on a campus that celebrates Juneteenth, so it’s been an awesome first time.”
Several informational displays highlighted the history of Juneteenth, which commemorates June 19, 1865, the day enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. The exhibits provided context for why the holiday remains significant and why it continues to be celebrated across the United States.
Beyond its historical focus, the event also emphasized the importance of community. Students from various backgrounds stopped to learn, ask questions, and connect. The atmosphere reflected Full Sail University’s commitment to creating spaces where different cultures and experiences can be shared and appreciated. The event really took off when the traditional Juneteenth dishes were brought out. The menu was soul food-centered and consisted of homemade trays of collard greens, curry chicken, corn bread, and sweet potatoes. However, before anyone ate, attendees were led in prayer. Along with blessing the food, she provided context for why the majority of the meal was red, stating that color represents power, sacrifice, and transformation within the culture.
One of the highlights of the celebration was a panel discussion featuring professionals from across the entertainment, media, and business industries. Featured guests included April Powell, Creative Executive at Tyler Perry Studios; Full Sail Hall of Fame alumni Leslie Brathwaite, a Grammy-winning mix engineer and producer; hip-hop artist Nino Breeze; and Johnny Magic, morning host of XL106.7, along with a few others. Drawing from their diverse experiences, the panelists shared insights on career development, entrepreneurship, representation, and the importance of building meaningful connections within creative industries. Attendees had the opportunity to hear firsthand accounts of the challenges and successes that shaped each guest’s career, creating a discussion that was both informative and inspiring for students pursuing their own professional goals. When asked about the event, Deschela McClenton, Event Chair for the Black Student Union, was more than excited. “We got rained out, but as you can see, everyone’s still vibing, and the panel turned out great.”
As the event continued throughout the day, attendees left with more than information. They left with a greater understanding of Juneteenth’s significance and a firsthand look at how cultural celebrations can bring people together through education, conversation, and shared experiences.
